BEAM (Built Environment and Architecture Media) is a new  enterprise committed to supporting and championing our professional community as it grapples with the challenges and opportunities of these uncertain times.

BEAM was born of a belief that the problems of the age call for creative solutions, collective endeavour, inter-disciplinary collaboration and the exchange of technical and scientific knowledge and expertise. 

Our mission is to inspire and inform, to nurture debate and dialogue and to act as a catalyst for change.

Jonathan Stock

Managing Director

Jonathan Stock is a dynamic entrepreneur and publisher with a passion for architecture and the built environment. He has a track record of reinventing established architectural titles in response to the changing needs of the profession and the realities of the fast-changing media landscape and has overseen the successful relaunch of The Architects’ Journal and RIBA Journal and leading the launch of the World Architecture Festival.

Previous roles include Publishing Director of the Architecture portfolio at Emap, Chief Executive of NLA and Director of RIBA Services. He also launched The Dialogue Group, a company dedicated to creating opportunities for discussion, debate, collaboration and business development between individuals, organisations and cities across the globe. Jonathan became the Publishing Director of Architecture Today 2017 and launched Built Environment & Architecture Media in 2020.

Isabel Allen

Editorial Director

Isabel Allen is a former Editor of The Architects’ Journal and was Co-Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Citizen magazine. She has won numerous prizes for editing and journalism including The British Society of Magazine Editors Editor of the Year and the Periodical Publishers Association Editor of the Year.

She co-founded HAB Housing with the broadcaster Kevin McCloud, with the express aim of designing beautifully designed sustainable housing at an affordable cost and introducing custom-build homes to the mass market and was Director of Communications for the Mayor of London’s Architecture & Urbanism unit.  

Isabel has curated and co-curated numerous exhibitions on architecture and urbanism including London Open City at Somerset House in 2009, the London pavilion at Shanghai Expo 2010 and the London exhibition at Seoul Biennale 2019 and has been a judge for national and international awards schemes including the RIBA Awards, the National Housing Awards, the World Leadership Awards and the Stirling Prize.

She is a member of the National Panel of the Civic Trust Awards, a Fellow of the RSA and an Honorary Fellow of the RIBA.

David Pead

David Pead

Executive Director

David Pead has held senior publishing and journalistic roles at many leading business-to-business publications. His track record ranges widely outside core magazine publishing to encompass the launch and development of conferences, exhibitions, on-line offerings and awards as well as book publishing, training programmes and bespoke “networking” events for specific markets.

David has wide experience of managing publishing and editorial teams in many markets, including civil engineering, manufacturing, telecoms, business travel, health and logistics.

Following a number of years on the Board at Emap Construct, the publishing group that included AJ, Construction News and NCE, David led the launch of Emap Communications’ first global summits – World Retail Congress and World Architecture Festival. Since then he has worked as a consultant for a wide range of companies, including two years as the Independent Chair of RIBA Journal’s Editorial Panel

As Editor of Local Government Chronicle in the 1990s he spent a year in South Africa launching a weekly national news magazine for senior local government officials at the invitation of the ANC as part of the post-Apartheid reconciliation process. He continues to write and has authored a website (www.myadvicegateway.com) that provides advice and helpful links for social housing tenants and is distributed via the housing options websites run by local authorities.
